One of the most destabilising periods of time for a school is the absence of a headteacher for the short, medium or long term. This may happen for a number of reasons:

​

• Governors unable to appoint a headteacher and need to readvertise.

• Headteacher absence through ill health or suspension.

• Bridging a gap between a previous headteacher leaving and a new appointment taking up post.

• Part time work with a Deputy Headteacher who had become Acting Headteacher

Inspection judgements can be negatively impacted by a perceived lack of leadership capability to move the school forward. Additionally, many school structures no longer have Deputy Headteachers or Deputies may have full teaching responsibility.

Examples of work previously undertaken

​

Stepped in to a Primary School under threat of slipping into Special Measures (as determined by the Local Authority) where the headteacher has become long term sick. The school was quickly stabilised and the newly appointed Deputy was supported and trained resulting in the school avoiding the category. The Deputy was subsequently developed and supported to become the new long term headteacher.

Following a headteacher needing to be removed from the Secondary Academy, we worked as Executive Headteacher to develop Senior Leaders and ensure the day to day running of the school until a new headteacher could be appointed. As the first two fields of candidate di not produce a suitable appointment, Governors were able to advertise a third time without concern about the quality of education during that period. Once an appointment was made, the Governors continued to use the service during the initial transition.
